Shopping
You love shopping? Welcome to Berlin's shopping paradise! Being the biggest city in Germany there is not only a lot of space to fit modern shopping malls and designer shops, but also many traditional flea markets and of course, famous department stores.
We recommend you to visit the already in 1907 built shopping mall KaDeWe (Kaufhaus des Westens). A walk through its gourmet department (6th floor) is an adventure, even if youre not looking to buy something. Other great malls are Alexa shopping mall at the Alexanderplatz and the Europa-Center in Charlottenburg.
Want to visit antique and flea markets in Berlin? Dont miss the popular flea market in the Mauerpark. Here you even have the possibility to sing outdoor karaoke.
Transport
The best way to get around in Berlin is the enormous and sometimes confusing public transport system. You can reach the majority of the main monuments by U-Bahn (metro) and S-Bahn (fast train), as well as the bus service. To get your itinerary easily and to not get lost in the traffic jungle we suggest to download the mobile app of the operating transport company BVG. Search also for a tourist information to get your Berlin map including an overview and map of the public transport system. However, you could also use the Metrobus, Tram and other services.
The Climate
Germany is said to be always rainy and cold. In fact, its not significantly colder or rainier in Berlin than in other northern European cities, such as Paris or Prague. Its true that the continental climate makes the weather rather unpredictable, but if you travel in early fall and summer you should be completely fine. Nevertheless, we recommend you to pack an umbrella just in case and a jacket for the evenings.
Food and Drink
Berlin has been a melting pot of cultures from all over Europe and even the world and it is still. No wonder why its rather difficult to distinguish a clear Berlin food culture. Its cuisine is more an adventure and a safari through the different kitchens Europes united with traditional German dishes. Sounds interesting? It definitely is! Try for example the dish that belongs to Berlin as much as the Brandenburg Gate, Currywurst. Although Hamburg is claiming that the spicy dish was invented there. Another curiosity might be that the Döner Kebab has its origins actually in Berlin and not as expected in Turkey.
The German capital offers you also a wide range of typical German dishes, such as Eisbein and Würzfleisch with the famous Sauerkraut. Not to forget that you have to go for brunch once youre in Berlin. Germans love to go small cafes and restaurants for long buffet brunches on Sundays. This is probably the only time when rushing Berlin stands still for some time.

Weve seen a lot of change in Berlin in the eight years weve been here and were sure the citys rapid pace of change wont slow down anytime soon. Berlin is one of Europes most famous hotspots and definitely worth a visit or two!
So what to visit when youre in the German capital? Here we give you some suggestions of what you can explore at the doorstep of your Berlin apartment:
One top tip when visiting Berlin would be to venture out of your Berlin vacation rental to the famous Brandenburg Gate. Its the landmark of Berlin and was built in the 18th century. From there you can walk down the boulevard Unter den Linden (Under the linden trees) until youll get to the Humboldt University, one of the oldest universities in Germany. Often during summer you can find a small book flea market in front of it.
A must do in Berlin is as well a visit to the picturesque enclosed courtyard complex, the Hackesche Höfe. Its the largest of its kind in Germany. Locals and visitors enjoy this place equally. In contrast to the Höfe the nearby Haus Schwarzenberg offers a more alternative style of courtyard. The Café Cinema located here has a really nice bohemian feel to it and is ideal for grabbing a coffee.
Visiting Berlin you should also learn a bit about its history. The city has been through so much change, that you cannot close your eyes from it anyways. We advise you to add the Holocaust memorial to your itinerary. This striking memorial was commissioned to honor the murdered Jews in Europe. Walk around Peter Eisenmans conceptual design and youll see theres also an underground information center. Its very informative, offering details about the Jewish people who suffered at the hands of the Nazis as well as about the design and construction of the memorial itself.
