Have you ever heard about Murano, in the Glass Islands of Venice? When we think about this beautiful and romantic Italian city, we all picture gondolas in the water with a sailor on a striped T-shirt, a Carnival celebration with many uncanny and stunning masks… But Venice is much more than that. The city is located in an island in the Venetian lagoon, and there are some other islands in the surroundings. Murano, with around 5,000 inhabitants, is the largest one of them, and it is famous for its colourful houses and the manufacturing of glass.

Getting to Murano is very easy, you just need to get a vaporetto that will take you there really quick, as it is only 1,5 km away from the city. The short trip is worth it – keep reading to find out why!

Murano, the glass island of Venice

What to visit in Murano

There are two main things to do in Murano, but they are surely enough to make the trip worth it. Take good note of the following:

  • Museo del Vetro: One of the most important museums in Venice, it shows glass collections that date back to the 19th century, and teaches you about the history of glass manufacturing.
  • Mazzega Glass Factory: Murano is the centre of glass making in Italy and the world, and you have the opportunity of learn how it’s done in factories such as this. The techniques will make your jaw fall to the floor.
  • Breath in the beauty: Murano is like a tiny Venice, as it is split in two by its own Grand Canal, which isn’t big at all if we compare it to the Grand Canal of Venice. Still, the calm waters and the houses that sprout at both sides of it, the colours and the blue, make it an impressive sight for all to see, and it is much less crowded. Murano is well worth a good promenade around the Grand Canal and also the surrounding narrow little streets, where you will be able to see beautiful buildings such as the Basilica di Santa Maria e San Donato, which dates back to the 7th century!

Are you ready to visit Murano? It would be a real pity to set foot in Venice and miss this wonderful little paradise. Don’t forget to share your experience with us!
