Barcelona is one of my favourite cities in the world and I think it’s definitely one of the best in Europe. I love the exciting mix of culture, striking architecture, delicious food, friendly locals and the laid back beach area. I love that you have the choice of spending the day in the busy city streets amongst the hustle and bustle of it all or you can just head to the beach and spend the day relaxing with your toes in the sand and the sun on your skin.
I especially love the different neighbourhoods in Barcelona and I particularly enjoyed the neighbourhood I stayed in during my last visit. Each of the neighbourhoods I’ve visited or stayed in the city seems to have their own personality, feel and atmosphere.
During this visit I had an awesome GowithOh apartment in the Eixample district that I absolutely adored. The Eixample area is found between the old city and what years ago were just surrounding small towns. This particular area of the city is actually pretty huge and has a population of more than 250,000!
Just around the corner from our apartment were cafes, shops and bars lining the long, wide, straight streets and they all seemed to be mostly populated by locals rather than tourists. Barcelona is a city that is always full to the brim with tourists so it was nice to stay in an area that felt more authentic and local and an apartment is always more appealing to me than a hotel.
I loved being able to choose from restaurants in our neighbourhood that were full of locals, because you always know that those are the best kind of places. Although few people spoke English in this part of the city they were all friendly and didn’t seem to mind that we were clearly not locals.
Apartments always feel so much more homely, welcoming and comfortable than boring old one-size-fits-all hotel rooms that all look pretty much identical. Having an apartment where we could chill out on the massive terrace with a bottle of wine enjoying views over the city after a long day of sightseeing was the perfect way to spend our time in the city and actually made me fall deeper in love with Barcelona.
It was also a great place to enjoy a lazy breakfast of fruit and croissants on the terrace whilst looking over our city map to decide what we wanted to see and do each day. Having a lingering breakfast on the roof terrace of our apartment was infinitely better than grumbling over a mediocre hotel breakfast.
I felt more like I belonged to the city by staying in an apartment, rather than feeling as though I was just some anonymous tourist passing through on my way to somewhere else. This was definitely aided by the fact the man at the café on the corner of our street spoke to us daily in broken English and entertained my dodgy attempts at speaking Catalan.
Our apartment experience with GowithOh undoubtedly improved our time visiting Barcelona and only made my love for this city grow. I’m currently plotting ways to get back there for another visit!
