From touchdown to downtown – getting from Florence Airport (FLR) to the city centre

The first stop on your Florentine adventure is almost always Florence Airport, commonly referred to as Amerigo Vespucci, or Peretola. It’s located north-west of the city, just a few kilometres outside the historical centre. Getting to the city centre has never been easier and we’ve included the different options here to get you to your holiday apartment as soon as possible.

Airport Transfer with a Private Car Service

The easiest way to get to your apartment from the Florence Airport (Peretola) is by a private airport transfer. You book your transfer online before you fly to Florence then a driver will pick you up in the arrival halls with a name sign. You will be driven in a black premium vehicle to your apartment with a professional driver for almost the same price as a taxi. It is a nice service if you are nervous about getting around the city because you put in the addresses of where to go and the driver takes you directly there. Our recommended company for this service in Florence is myDriver Airport Transfer Florence.

Private Airport Transfer with online booking

volainbus_florenceairport_giokai421For those travelling alone or on a budget, the bus is likely the best option. Every half hour from 06:00 to 23:30 a special airport shuttle bus runs to and from the central train station, Santa Maria Novella. It costs 6 euros for a ticket or 10 euros for a return. Look for the Volainbus outside the airport next to the taxi stand - you’ll find full details on the local bus station’s website. The route typically takes about 20-25 minutes and you can buy your ticket directly from the bus driver.

Queuing @ a Taxi Stand in Florence by Brenda AnnerlThe easiest way to get into the centre is by taxi and luckily there are established fixed rates from the airport to the city centre. Depending on the time and day of week, expect to pay from around 20-23 euros for the trip. At night (22:00 – 07:00) and on holidays, the fares increase so make sure to ask the driver for the approximate price before taking off. The taxi stand is located directly in front of the arrivals exit door - you can’t miss it.

Although there are fixed fares, it’s not uncommon for taxi drivers to chance their luck and demand more cash once you arrive at your destination. The best thing is to get verbal agreement before setting foot in the taxi. That way you can avoid the awkward “that’ll be 5 euros more for me lifting your suitcase” conversation outside your accommodation.

The local number to call for a taxi in Florence is + 39 055/4242 or 055 + 4390/4499/4798 and they usually arrive within a few minutes. *Tip – a 1-euro surcharge is added for luggage (it shouldn’t be more than one euro per person).

For any other details you might be missing, visit the airport’s homepage.
