Plaza de Cibeles

Plaza de Cibeles, one of the most majestic and famous spots of Madrid

  • Plaza de Cibeles, also known as Cibeles Square, is one of the most representative places of Madrid. The first thing that will catch your eye will be the Fountain of Cibeles, designed by architect Ventura Rodríguez in 1782. The fountain is an homage to the Anatolian goddess Cybele, portrayed on a carriage pulled by lions. It used to provide water to Madrid, but nowadays has only a decorative function. Behind the fountain, you will find the majestic Cybele Palace (formerly known as the Palace of Communication), which used to be the postal service’s headquarters. You will also be able to spot the headquarters of the Bank of Spain and that of the Spanish Army. All of those buildings make an impressive neo-classical marble ensemble that constitutes one of the most famous views of the Spanish capital.
  • Plaza de Cibeles is a unique place in Madrid – and not just because of its beauty. In fact, this is the joining point of three districts of the city: Centro, Salamanca and Retiro. During your stay in the apartments near Plaza de Cibeles, you will be in the neuralgic centre of Madrid, so, besides the locals, your neighbours will mainly be other tourists like yourself. However, there are many locals who live in the area as well, especially families, young professionals and expats who have come to Madrid to work or study for a while. So, during your stay near Plaza de Cibeles, you will be able to enjoy the local atmosphere while staying in a historic place!
  • Right before arriving to Plaza de Cibeles, the avenue of Gran Via ends in Calle de Alcalá, which will bring you straight to the plaza. As you probably know, Gran Via is one of the main avenues of Madrid, and it is full of shops and markets, which makes it a perfect place for a shopping spree. But that’s not all in terms of shopping! A bit north of Plaza de Cibeles you will find a shopping centre, El Jardín de Serrano, which is located right next to the metro station Serrano. There you will find some exclusive fashion and accessories shops, as well as designer’s stores. It’s the perfect place to find some unique items and gifts for your loved ones. A bit further north, you will find an El Corte Inglés, a store from a famous Spanish chain of department stores, where you will be able to buy clothes, shoes, accessories, home décor items, perfumes, jewellery, entertainment products and many more.
  • Madrid is a big city, sometimes even for being in the city centre, so you will need to use the public transport sometimes. Plaza de Cibeles is close to two of the public transport networks of Madrid, the metro and the train. You will probably use more the metro, but if you need to take the train, station Recoletos is at walking distance from the square.
Let’s focus on the metro, which will probably be your preferred means of transportation during your stay in the Spanish capital. The closest metro station is Banco de España, where you can take line 2, which will bring you to other central locations like Sol or Opera. But that’s not your only option! You are at walking distance from the metro station Gran Vía, where you can get lines 1 and 5, and if you walk up Paseo de Recoletos until Plaza de Colón (Columbus Square) you will be able to get line 4 in metro station Colón.
  • There are lots of things to do around Plaza de Cibeles, besides seeing the square itself! The apartments near Plaza de Cibeles are in a privileged central location, very close to many great tourist attractions of the city of Madrid. Right behind it you will find the famous Puerta de Alcalá, one of the old gates to the old Madrid that gives today access to the famous Parque del Retiro or Buen Retiro Park, the most famous green area of the city. This beautiful park is big and beautiful enough for you to spend a nice family afternoon (or day!) with the whole family. There are ponds, monuments and even a botanic garden. Finally, you can go west to walk along the most famous avenue of Madrid, Gran Vía, full of monuments and elegant, impressive buildings.
And, of course, we can’t forget about the great museums in the area! Plaza de Cibeles is next to one of the corners of what is called the Golden Triangle of Art of Madrid, formed by the three main museums of the city: El Prado Museum, the most famous and important; the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía or Queen Sofia Museum, a big art centre where you will be able to enjoy Spanish and Contemporary art, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza.
  • We all know how delicious Spanish cuisine is, and Madrid has a great gastronomic offer that will surely delight you. From tapas to fancy dishes, you won’t need to go far from Plaza de Cibeles to get a wonderful dish on your table. You can have a great meal at Cien Llaves, which offers a great terrace besides a great menu, and you can also walk a bit south to enjoy the typical food at places like Taberna de la Dolores. If you’re very hungry, you will find an Italian restaurant from the chain La Tagliatella nearby, which offers very generous rations of yummy pasta and pizza dishes.
And if you want to have an unforgettable dinner, you can do so in the fancy restaurant Palacio de Cibeles, where you will be able to try unique Spanish dishes made by a chef as you enjoy the views of the plaza. They also offer great cocktails for after dinner, so you can have a complete evening there. Finally, if you want to try something different, we recommend the restaurant Yakitoro by Chicote, a Japanese-inspired restaurant by the chef Alberto Chicote, famous for its collaborations with different TV cooking reality shows in Spain.
  • Plaza de Cibeles is a privileged location for its beauty and its closeness to many important monuments of the city, but it is also considered privileged for how close it is to many party areas of the city. It is within walking distance to Chueca, the famous gay neighbourhood and party area of the city, where you will find many gay-friendly bars and pubs where to dance, have a drink and mingle with the locals. It is also close to calle Huertas, another popular area full of atmosphere and nightlife. And finally, if you go south you will find Kapital (next to Atocha), the most famous club of the city. As you can see, the apartments near Plaza de Cibeles are a great starting point for a fun and unforgettable night!
