Alsergrund

Overview
While most visitors to Vienna dont venture further into the 9th soaring neo-Gothic Votivkirche, the area known to locals as Alsergrund boasts a number of less ostentatious attractions with truly unique character. A walk further into its historical heart will take you past many of the citys most important universities and medical facilities, as well as some fascinating hidden gems. district than the

Know your neighbours
Because the district is studded with most of Viennas medical school facilities, university complexes, hospitals, and medical museums, the crowd around the 9th tends to be comparatively academic. During the daytime especially, the areas around Vienna Universitys campus (Altes AKH Campus) and the Business Univeristy (Wirtschafts Uni) are heavily populated by students, professors, and medical staff.

Shopping options
While Alsergrund doesnt include any major shopping centres of note, the area does contain two of the citys (very) few late-night grocery stores (Billa in Michaelbeuern/AKH, Billa in Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof). If youre looking for unique gifts and souvenirs, take a walk up the Servitengasse - the restaurants, confectioners, and boutiques offer a good mix of charming local ambience and fun products you wont find anywhere else.

Getting around
Because the 9th southeast, U4 to the northeast and the U6 to the west), studded with major transit junctions (Spittelau, Schottentor/Universität, and Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof), and criss-crossed by bus and tram lines, Alsergrund is best accessed by public transport. Parking opportunities are sparse and one-way streets (Einbahn) sometimes change direction unpredictably, so driving tends to be a hassle. district is bordered by three U-Bahn lines (the U2 to the

See and Do
Once youve knocked the impressive Votivkirche off your list, venturing into the heart of the 9th will afford you some of the citys most historical sites. Medical history is well represented by the Josephinium Medical Museum, former insane asylum inside the Old General Hospital (Narrenturm im Alten AKH), and Freud Museum and former apartment. The estate and gardens of the Liechtenstein Palais, nearby Strudelhofstiege, and former General Hospital (Altes AKH, now the University Campus) provide a survey of architecture dating back to the 18th century. More poignantly, the excavation of the hidden Jewish Cemetery (Jüdischer Friedhof) inside the retirement home at Seegasse 9 grants a glimpse of Orthodox graves dating back to 1520. If youre looking for something more modern, check out the citys solid waste incinerator (Fernwärme Wien) - with the bright blue exhaust tower topped by its iconic shiny gold ball, its a hard attraction to miss.

Eating out
Many of the eateries in and around the University Campus in the Altes AKH offer a surprising range of culinary options to suit the student budget (Wiener Deewan, Suppenwirtschaft, Sly & Arnies, Pie Factory). Of course, a number of the most popular of these options also happen to cater to the tastes of students - the breweries in the 9th (Universitätsbräu, Stiegl Ambulanz, 9er Bräu) produce some great suds and special atmosphere, especially in the warmer months and in the weeks before Christmas.
-
Nightlife
Especially in the stretch of Währinger Straße between Universität and the north end of the UniCampus (Altes AKH), a number of Irish-style pubs (Charlie Ps, Billys Bones) promote a particularly vibrant party scene most weekends. During the summer months, the Summerstage sets up along the Danube Canal between Roßauer Lände and Schottenring - a 2-level waterfront venue with over 40 bars, restaurants, and even beach volleyball pits that provides a laid-back party atmosphere virtually every night of the week (and late night on weekends). If youre looking for live music, head to the WUK. This community-operated arts, music, and bicycle collective has indoor and outdoor stages and plenty of cheap drinks.
