In brief: The preferred district of the Dutch, the area features an interesting mix between its working class past and its modern, eclectic and elegant present.
Highlights: The markets on Saturdays and Mondays in Noordermarkt, the pubs along the Brouwersgracht canal.
Getting there: On foot or by bike from the medieval centre or the Grachtengordel district. Trams 13 and 17 and buses 18, 21 and 22 leave from the Central Station. From other parts of the city you can take trams 3, 7, 10 and 14.
Why stay: Perhaps Amsterdam’s most authentic district, with truly stunning canals and streets and a proximity to the city centre that make it a very interesting option.
