In brief: Amsterdam’s green district, peaceful, family friendly and with many places to relax in the shade. Its Jewish past gives it a unique character.
Highlights: The Artis Royal Zoo, the Hortus Botanicus botanic garden, De Gooyer, the only windmill in the city centre, and the spectacular Hermitage Amsterdam museum.
Getting there: You can walk from the city centre, though it is better to take a bike or one of the trams that leave from Central Station (lines 9 and 14). You can also take the metro (the Waterlooplein and Wesperplein stops).
Why stay: A peaceful district, yet still close to the medieval centre and the Grachtengordel district. Very suitable for families.
