Piazza Navona

Piazza Navona, a historical place with a great cultural charm

  • When you visit Rome, you will find an unexpected gem in Piazza Navona. Unexpected because at the top of your list you will have other monuments like the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon or the Spanish Steps, so discovering the lively atmosphere of Piazza Navona will be a pleasant surprise.
Piazza Navona, one of the cultural centres of the city of Rome, is characterised by its unique shape, a long oval, and by the three great fountains located there: The Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, topped with an Egyptian Obelisk, the Fontana del Moro and the Fontana di Nettuno. Besides, you will be able to admire some magnificent buildings, such as the church Sant’Agenese in Agona, the church of Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore or the Palazzo Braschi, where the Museum of Rome is located.
  • Piazza Navona is located in the rione VII of Rome, Parione. The rioni are the historical neighbourhoods or districts in which Rome is divided. Parione takes its name from a great old wall (Parietone) that was located there, and it is between other two rioni, Ponte and Sant’Eustacchio. This area is a beautiful one, quiet and ideal for a slow walk, as soon as you leave the crowded Piazza Navona. From the apartments near Piazza Navona, you will be able to get to know this typical Roman neighbourhood and mingle with the residents, which are mostly families and young professionals.
  • From the apartments near Piazza Navona you will be able to find a different style of shops than in the Trident of Rome, the three streets that convey in Piazza del Popolo and that constitute the main shopping area of the centre of the city. In Via del Governo Vecchio you will be able to go to stylish shops with jewellery and luxury clothes, as well as designer’s shops with Italian creations.
Not much of a trendy shopper? Don’t worry! A bit south of Piazza Navona you will find the lively Campo dei Fiori, a beautiful square where there is a great market from Monday to Saturday where you will be able to find delicatessen and other food products, flowers and other items.
  • If you’re a traveller experienced in European cities, you must be used to using the underground system to move around. It is indeed comfortable to use these underground connections to go from one place to another, but, unfortunately, the metro of Rome is more limited than in other European capitals such as Paris or London. Many remains were discovered while digging to build the tunnels, so they couldn’t build that many lines. In Piazza Navona, there isn’t any metro station close by, so the best way to move around… is using your own feet! Fortunately, there are so many important landmarks in Rome that you won’t have to walk much to find another attraction, and, besides, the city is incredibly beautiful and it’s worth seeing it in detail. From the apartments near Piazza Navona, you will be very close to Castel Sant’Angelo, Campo dei Fiori, Piazza Venezia and the Pantheon, among others.

Once you’ve seen the important buildings and monuments, you can stay there to have coffee in one of the beautiful terraces, since the atmosphere there is great. Besides, your children can have some fun in the fountains! You can also visit the Palazzo Braschi, that hosts the Museum of Rome: There, you will be able to learn some more about the amazing history of the city.
If you cross the river through the Ponte Sant Angelo, you will arrive to Castel Sant Angelo, and old fortress that was built in 135 AD under the orders of emperor Hadrian. It has a wonderful history that you will be able to learn if you visit it. For instance, did you know that a corridor between this fortress and Vatican City was built during the 13th so the Pope could escape in case he was in danger? Castel Sant’Angelo opens every day except for Mondays.
Finally, Piazza Navona is very close to another important monument that you will be able to visit during the same day, the wonderful Pantheon.

But if you’re in the mood to go dancing… You’re in the best possible place! Most of the clubs in Rome are located outside of the historical city centre, but there are two good exceptions in Piazza Navona: Shari Vari Playhouse and La Cabala. The Shari Vari is a fancy restaurant club where you will be able to attend a fun party or a cocktail one, since there can be dancing at different times of the day! La Cabala is an exclusive club located next to the river Tiber, with private booths and a piano bar.
