Karntnerstrasse, a commercial street in the old town of Vienna

  • Karntnerstrasse, also known as Kärntner Straße (in German), is one of the most famous streets of the city centre of Vienna and the main commercial Street in the area. It runs between two plazas with two beautiful religious buildings, Stephansplatz (where the St. Stephen’s Cathedral is located) and Karlsplatz (where you will find Karlskirche).
Karntnerstrasse is a commercial street with history: its original name is thought to be Strata Cantianorum (as says the first record of Karntnerstrasse that has been found, from the 13th century), which means that it was an important commerce route towards the south, towards the province of Carinthia.
Karntnerstrasse is much more than a shopping street, though. It is a beautiful street at the heart of the old town of Vienna, and one of the city’s assets that will make you fall in love with it.
  • The apartments near Karntnerstrasse are located in the old town of Vienna, in the administrative district number 1 of the city, which is called Innere Stadt. This is where you will probably spend most of the time, since most of Vienna’s important tourist attractions are located here. It is actually the least densely populated district of the city, but it is also the busiest and the most crowded by tourists. Your neighbours during your stay near Karntnerstrasse will mostly be other tourists like yourself, but you will also be able to meet some of the locals as you enjoy the beautiful and imperial atmosphere of the city.
  • Were you planning on doing some shopping during your stay in the capital of Austria? Well, if the answer to that question is yes, you decided to stay in the right place to do so, because Karntnerstrasse is one of the main commercial streets of Vienna. The shopping in the city of Vienna is a bit different than in other European capitals: you will find many jewellery and luxury shops like Swarovski, for instance, but don’t worry: You will also find some of the major fashion brands in this street, such as H&M, Forever 21 or Zara. If you like to shop in department stores, you’re in luck, because you will find an important one in Karntnerstrasse: the Steffl department store.
Around Karntnerstrasse you will also find specialised records stores, since you will be very close to the Vienna State Opera. Finally, don’t forget to explore the little streets in the search of unique souvenirs for your loved ones!
  • During your stay in the apartments near Karntnerstrasse your feet will be your preferred means of transportation. The historic centre of Vienna is a beautiful and monumental place, and there are so many interesting things to see that walking from one place to the other may just be the best decision. However, if you get tired, you can use the two main transportation networks of the city, the tram and the metro. The metro or U-Bahn will probably be the most useful for you, because it communicates very well the historic centre with the rest of the city. Near Karntnerstraat you will find two metro stations where you can access four of the U-Bahn lines, one at each end. The northernmost one is Stephansplatz, where you can access lines U1 and U3. If you walk down Karntnerstrasse you will arrive to Karlplatz, where you can also take line U1, but lines U2 and U4 too.
  • Of course, one of the main things that you can do in Karntnerstrasse is to go shopping – it is, after all, one of the main commercial streets of Vienna and probably the most important of the city centre. But you will probably be taken aback by the beauty of the city and will want to explore its streets and monuments. So when can you start? Well, St. Stephen’s Cathedral or Stephansdom , located in Stephansplatz, at one of the ends of Karntnerstrasse, is usually taken as a starting point by the visitors. You can visit the beautiful historic cathedral and then go from there to any of the other important monuments of the city centre: the Mozarthaus Vienna is right next to it, or you can go towards the opposite direction and visit another beautiful church, St. Peter’s church or Peterskirche. The former imperial palace of Vienna, Hofburg Palace, is also a mandatory visit and it is close by as well, as is the Albertina, a wonderful museum that hosts an impressive collection of drawings and prints. Don’t miss out on visiting the Imperial Crypt of Vienna, also called the Capuchin Crypt, or the Vienna State Opera . If you walk down Karntnerstrasse, you will arrive to Karlsplatz, where you will be able to see the Karlskirche.
We recommend you to go on a walking tour of the historic centre of Vienna to learn about the history and the imperial past of the city. Vienna was the capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and it has a very rich and interesting history that is well worth learning about.
  • Are you ready to try Austrian cuisine? They are famous for their meat dishes, like the Wiener Schnitzel, with sides such as Sauerkraut, but they are especially known for its sweet treats, such as the apple pastry called Äpfelstrudel or their wonderful chocolate cake, the Sachertorte. If you want to try Austrian cuisine, we recommend the Plachuttas Gasthaus zur Oper, the restaurant Führich or the Reinthaler, where you will be able to try those specialties and some others. If you’re travelling with your children and they’re not too keen on trying Austrian cuisine, there are some other options in the area, such as Japanese restaurants (Shiki), Italian restaurants (Pizzeria Venezia, Ristorante Danieli) or, maybe the last resort but still useful sometimes, fast-food chains like McDonalds and Burger King.
  • The best option in Vienna during the night is to walk around the little streets and follow the locals, who always go to the best places. We have a few recommendations in the area around Karntnerstrasse for you though, such as the Loos American Bar, a very charming and unique place with a beautiful decoration, the Porgy & Bess jazz club, the 1010 Bar Café Wien or the Kruger’s American Bar. Another great option is to check the agenda and the tickets available at the Vienna State Opera, because it is possible that you will be able to catch a great concert or performance. There are many tickets that are very reasonably priced, so don’t dismiss the possibility thinking how expensive opera usually is.
