Notre Dame

Notre Dame, a legend surrounded by Parisian life

  • If you’re planning a trip to Paris, Notre Dame Cathedral must be on the top of your list of things to see – and this beautiful church of French Gothic style well deserves it! Also known as Our Lady of Paris, Notre Dame is located in the Île de la Cité and offers an astonishing view from the other side of the river Seine. It was built in the 12th century and it is one of the most legendary buildings in Paris due to its rich history. Much of its patrimony was destroyed during the French revolution and restored later in the 19th century. Its beautiful stained glass windows make it just as beautiful from the inside.
  • Notre Dame is in a privileged location, in the beautiful and unique Île de la Cité, a small island in the middle of the river Seine. Its in the 4th arrondissement of Paris , located on the right bank of the river and very close to the Pompidou Centre , the main contemporary art museum in the city. If you book one of GowithOh’s apartments near Notre Dame, you will be able to enjoy the friendly and youthful neighbours of the Latin Quarter, which you will find right after crossing the river. The Latin Quarter is one of the liveliest districts of the capital of France!
  • Paris is a great city for shopping – it is, after all, one of the fashion capitals of the world! There are plenty of places where you can breathe the haute-couture and shop in wonderful boutiques, like the Champs Elysées or rue de Passy. But if you decide to stay in one of our apartments near Notre Dame , it will be time to do another kind of shopping: the cultural kind! Near Notre Dame, you will find the bouquinistes, who sell second-hand books and rarities by the river Seine. It’s worth passing by even if you end up not buying anything! Besides, in the area you will find plenty of book stores and record stores, where you will find also many second-hand bargains. Very close, in rue de la Bûcherie, you will find the famous bookstore Shakespeare and Company.
  • Notre Dame cathedral is of course very well communicated with the rest of the city, so it will be easy to move around if you book an apartment in the area. There are several metro stops in the area: right by Notre Dame, in the very same Île de la Cité, where it is located, you will find metro station Cité, where you will be able to get on line 4. You can get lines 1 and 11 in the station Hôtel de Ville, and line 7 at Pont Marie. Besides, Notre Dame has its own RER train station, Saint Michel – Notre Dame.

Notre Dame’s cathedral is a mandatory visit: You will be astonished by the beauty and startled by the expression of the gargoyles. If you’re travelling with kids, you can explain the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame – you can even watch the film with them before your trip so they enjoy more such a magnificent cathedral! You can visit Notre Dame inside, of course, and you can also climb to the towers, but keep in mind that there is always a huge queue because people can only go inside in groups of 20. We recommend that you go early so you don’t spend there the whole day – something you won’t want to do, having so many amazing attractions nearby. It opens early in the morning.
Once you’ve visited Notre Dame, there is much more to do around! You can walk by the river Seine and see the bouquinistes, or go do some shopping at the Champs Elysées, which aren’t far. You can try the classical but wonderful Brasserie de l’Isle Saint Louis, or Le Porte-Pot, in the Latin Quarter. And, of, course, don’t deny your kids a wonderful ice cream from Berthillon!
A cheaper option, and a great one if you’re traveling with kids, is to grab some sandwiches (or buy some delicious crepes!) and go enjoy them at the Luxembourg gardens, which aren’t far if you book one of our apartments near Notre Dame. A good place to buy those sandwiches would be Maison David, a place where you can also stay and eat – but standing up! An unusual but very nice lunch-experience.
  • If you’re in a going out mood and you are staying near Notre Dame, you are in the best place to have fun! You will be very close to the Latin Quarter and rue Mouffetard, two of the main bar areas of the city. There you will be able to mingle with both locals and expats, and enjoy one of the friendliest atmospheres in the city. The Requin Chagrin is one of the best bars in the city, and also quite a cheap one! There, you can try different beers and also grab a bite and, besides, it’s perfect for those night owls who don’t really like to go clubbing: Closing time is at 4 am!
