Piazza del Popolo

Piazza del Popolo: An Egyptian obelisk and two unique twin churches

  • Rome is a city of fountains and plazas: They are all around, and it’s difficult to choose which is the most beautiful! Piazza del Popolo is a good example of the beauty of Roman plazas: a square of neoclassical style with a big Egyptian Obelisk presiding it and several important buildings surrounding it, such as the Porta del Popolo, which once was the Porta Flaminia of the city of Rome and was surrounded by the Aurelian walls of the city. In the plaza, you will also find the twin churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli, built in the 17th century and an entrance to the shopping street of Via del Corso. At the left of the plaza, you will find the Fontana del Nettuno, and at the right, the Fontana della Dea di Roma.
Even if Piazza del Popolo translates as “People’s Square” in English, the name Popolo actually comes from latin populous, which is the name of the poplar leaves. Piazza del Popolo is one of the most popular plazas of Rome: it is nowadays the main commercial centre of the city, and it still has a great history: It used to be an entrance to the city of Rome.
