Weather in Pisa

Pisa has a mild Mediterranean climate with the same hot summers and cool winters associated with the rest of central Italy. The city sees around 2,300 hours of sunshine every year, with July the sunniest month. With a number of annual events and festivals held across the city and province of Pisa come rain or shine, the Mediterranean climes are just one reason visitors flock to the region every year.

Seasonal overview

Spring

The weather in Pisa during the spring is pleasant and not too hot nor too cold with an average temperature of 16°C. It’s not as popular a time to visit as the height of the summer, meaning a visit to Pisa during this time offers more of a slice of local Pisan life, with the Italians still going about their daily business before they go on their summer vacations.

While April is the month with the highest chance of rain (with an average of 9.5 days of rain during the month), you can still expect 190 hours of sunshine throughout the month too. By the time it gets to May, the chance of rain has dropped to an average of 7 days out of the whole month, and the sunshine hours over 240, with ten hours of daylight each day too.

Summer

Leaning Tower of PisaSummer is the most popular time for visitors to come to Pisa, with often hot temperatures and high humidity. July is the sunniest month and the least rainy, with an average of 2.5 rainy days and 316 hours of sunshine. The Pisan summer has a record high temperature of 39°C. While hot and humid days make sunscreen a necessity for visiting Pisa at this time of year, there is often some respite in the evenings, where the temperature cools and a breeze makes its way over the city from the coast.

Autumn

The autumn is another pleasant and often overlooked time of the year to visit Pisa, particularly in September and October when the temperature is still balmy. With an average temperature of just over 16°C in October and more than 175 hours of sunshine, meandering around Pisa’s sights is a comfortable experience around this time. From October the risk of rain starts to get a little higher, with November being the rainiest month of the latter half of the year.

Winter

puddle-shutterstock_146671205Winter in Pisa is a much more enjoyable experience than it can be in many other parts of Europe. While the temperature has been known to drop below freezing on occasion, the average temperature between December and February is usually around 7°C. As long as you have a coat to wrap up in, it’s still fine sightseeing weather. The risk of rain is limited to around 7 or 8 days throughout each month, and it can be a surprisingly sunny time of year too, with around 100 hours of sun each month. This time of year can sometimes be foggy, bringing with it some rain and hazier views of the Leaning Tower.

Make the most of Pisa’s weather

Pisa’s weather is ideal for visitors to explore the city comfortably. During the height of the summer, the cathedral, Leaning Tower of Pisa and some of the museums in medieval stone buildings provide a cool respite from the humidity; during other times of the year those same buildings provide shelter from rain. A cooling river cruise along the Arno is another great summer activity, while spring and autumn are ideal times for the more active-minded to cycle or explore on foot the coastal Parco di Migliarino. Pack a variety of clothes for all occasions and eventualities and your Pisa stay will be delightful, whatever the weather.
