Piazzale Michelangelo

Piazzale Michelangelo, the best viewpoint of Florence

  • Piazzale Michelangelo is one of the most visited places in Florence thanks to the wonderful views of the city that it offers. It is a plaza up on a hill that was built in 1869 and designed by the architect Giuseppe Poggi. Even though it is visited mostly for the breath-taking view of the city of Florence, the plaza is beautiful as well: since it is dedicated to the artist Michelangelo, there are reproductions of several of his works, including the David and the four allegories located in the Medici Chapel.
Piazzale Michelangelo is flanked by two beautiful gardens, the Giardino dell’Iris and the Giardino delle Rose.

The streets surrounding the Florence Cathedral are known for its haute-couture shops: You will find brands known internationally, such as Gucci, Prada or Sisley, and some high-quality Italian brands, and also many luxury jewellery shops like Tiffany’s. Besides, there is so much to see that you won’t need to walk for long before arriving to another great landmark or museum. However, the Piazzale Michelangelo isn’t right at the city centre, but at the other side of the Arno river – which makes sense, because is the main viewpoint to see the city centre from afar. Florence doesn’t have a metro system, so the best way to arrive there or to leave the are to go to the centre is by bus. Right next to the viewpoint and the replica of Michelangelo’s David, you will find bus stops for buses 12 and 6, but the ones that will take you closest to the city centre are 22 and 23.
