Casco Antiguo Sevilla

-
In brief: This area of the city is full of monuments, including a number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Cathedral with its famous Giralda, the Alcázar of Seville and the Archivo General de Indias. Cobbled side streets, small squares, low houses and elegant courtyards are typical of this area. The Old Town is the citys historic centre and the area where you will find the majority of its monuments. The district is located to the east of the Guadalquivir River and is connected to other historic areas such as Macarena, Santa Cruz and Nervión. For a plenty of monuments, you need only visit the El Arenal neighbourhood, Sevilles old port where the ships from America would unload their goods. These goods were initially stored in Las Ataranzas, warehouses built in 1252 by Alfonso X. Later, Las Ataranzas became the Fundación Real or the Casa de la Moneda, a storehouse for gold and silver from the American colonies. Close by you will find the Torre del Oro (Golden Tower) that also dates from the 13th century and which formed part of the walls that surrounded the city until 1821. The tower is located on the Paseo de Colón that is full of kiosks and terraces and which is a popular meeting point, especially during the summer. The Torre de Oro is followed by the Teatro de la Maestranza opera house, which in turn is followed by one of the cultural symbols of Andalusia, the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de la Caballería bullring, home to the citys bullfights. The Arenal neighbourhood is also the ideal place to enjoy some tapas, especially in the area surrounding Plaza de Abastos and in Calle Adriano. As well as being the place to go for a drink at night, the area is also the favourite meeting place for aficionados of bullfighting who gather here afterwards to discuss the afternoons events. On the other hand, the San Vicente district is traditionally one of the citys most refined areas and is home to the most well-off families. It is thus a peaceful and quiet area known principally for housing the Museum of Fine Arts, located in the old Convent of the Order of the Merced. The museum is considered Spains second most important art gallery after the Prado in Madrid. Here you can admire the works of some of Sevilles most celebrated painters, including Murillo, Valdés Leal and Zurbarán. The Calle Santa Clara is also known as the street of the three convents, being is home to three of the citys most famous: Santa Ana, Santa Clara and San Clemente, all of which produce their own traditional sweets. Nearby you will find the Alameda de Hércules (Hercules Mall), a long passageway built in 1574 that features four columns at the corners completed with statues of Hercules, Julio Cesar and Kings Carlos I and Felipe II. The surrounding area is known for being bohemian and alternative and also includes a strong presence from the local gay community, something that can be seen in the bars and clubs. By definition, the city centre is where you will find most activity, both commercial and in terms of foot traffic. Calle Siepres, Calle Tetuán, Plaza Nueva and the surrounding streets are the perfect place for a spot of shopping. Here you will find national and international clothes shops catering to all pockets, as well as traditional shops and cafes. Calle Tetuán leads to Plaza Nueva, one of Sevilles largest and most lively squares that plays home to numerous fairs and events. Between Plaza Nueva and Plaza de San Francisco you will find the town hall that dates from the mid-16th century, another obligatory visit in the Old Town. The adjacent Plaza de San Francisco was, and in many ways continues to be, the citys principle main square and is the preferred location for official events. To immerse yourself in the daily life of Seville, a visit to Plaza de la Encarnacion is a must. The square is found away from the typical tourist route and provides access to Calle Laraña, home to the Iglesia de la Anunciación. Below this 16th century building there is a well-kept and little-visited secret in the form of the Panteón de los Sevillanos Ilustres, where illustrious figures from Sevilles history lie, including the poet Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer. For a more modern view of Seville, be sure to visit the Metropol Parasol de la Encarnación, a structure that includes a viewing platform that was designed by the Berlin architect Jürgen Mayer and which is also found in the Plaza de la Encarnación. Following Calle Laraña you will come to La Campana, another well-known meeting place that is full of the hustle and bustle of daily life. Here no visitor to Seville should miss out on the chance to try one of the sweets from the shop of the same name that has been making products according to traditional local recipes since 1885. This crossroads also marks the start of the official Semana Santa route that all the brotherhoods must follow. Night owls will enjoy the lively terraces in and around Plaza del Salvador (also recommendable for an aperitif) and the bars of La Alfalfa located in Calle Benito Pérez Galdós.
Highlights: The Seville Cathedral with the Giralda, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; the Plaza de Toros Maestranza; the Alcázar of Seville; the Maria Luisa Park; the typical, yellow-painted buildings featuring courtyards full of flowers. Taverns, bars and nightclubs.
Getting there: Tram T1 connects the Old Town with line L1 of the metro at the Prado and Puerta de Jerez stops. Various bus routes pass by the main tourist attractions: the Cathedral is located at the Puerta Nueva stop of the C5 route, with the Archivo General de Indias also located close by. From here you will easily be able to get around on foot.
Why stay: A central area with lots of history and art. Here you can admire architectural masterpieces of world renown. Vibrant nightlife with a wide selection of taverns, bars and nightclubs catering to all tastes.
